10 Sunscreen Sticks and Roll Ons To Sun-BLOCK Out The Haters

Sunscreen, sunblock, sun tan lotion, whatever you call it… there’s a bajillion to choose from. Some sunscreens come as a spray, others in a tube of lotion, but roll on and stick form are my personal favorites.

The reason, you ask? Global warming. We love effortless spray bottles, but they contain specific chemicals that protect you from the sun — not the wild life that resides in the ocean blue.

When aerosols are used haphazardly, the chemicals will settle on the ground in a toxic cloud of pollutants that are swept into the ocean. Not only this, but it can easily get in your eyes, or worse, ingested — bleh, not the type of drink I want on a hot summer day.

To make your life simpler, I’ve compiled a list of 10 sexy, safe, and environmentally friendly sunscreen roll ons and sticks to choose from. Happy browsing!

Glow Stick SPF 50

supergoop glow stick sunscreen stick with spf 50

This just in, the must-have sunscreen of the summer brought to you by Supergoop! Self-proclaimed experts on SPF, Supergoop! uses active ingredients avobenzone (3.0%), octisalate (5.0%), and octocrylene (10.0%) in their popular roll on sunscreen stick, all of which aid each other in protecting skin from UV rays. However, it is important to note that large quantities of these chemicals can be harmful… so they aren’t the best choice formulaically. The popularity of the product comes from its wearability, leaving a glowy hydrating finish (all while protecting you), and packed inside an easy to store twist-up case.

Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Roll-On Lotion

SUN BUM mineral spf sunscreen in roll on form

What is a mineral sunscreen, you ask? Instead of using (sometimes harmful) chemicals to block those UV rays, minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have natural properties that protect your beautiful skin. Sun Bum’s Mineral Roll-On sunscreen uses the roll application method to help blend the product into skin (although you may have to rub in the excess). Topping off your look with a nourished look, this sunscreen really takes the bum–cake.

Sport Ultra Roll-On Sunscreen Lotion SPF 60+

sun bum sport spf 60+ roll on sunscreen

If you’re a sweaty human like me, the blistering heat of the summer leaves perspiration in some… interesting places (I promise, I really didn’t pee!). Which is why lathering on some good waterproof protection is always a good idea. Banana Boat’s Sport roll-on is here to save the day, made to resist the power of water and give us two hours of uninterrupted protection courtesy of acrylate copolymer, a water resistant agent. Ready, set, roll!

SPF 30 Good Sun Sport Organic Sunscreen Stick

Butterbean SPF 30 Good Sun Sport Organic Sunscreen Stick

The importance of a clean and sustainable lifestyle is not just a trend to be followed; if you’re going to call yourself an eco-friendly queen, you bes’ start acting like it. Butterbean is a good place to start, with a mission to help you invest in quality products that work to heal the planet. Made with zinc oxide, coconut oil, vitamin E, neem & sunflower oils, and beeswax, this organic sunscreen stick is bound to be your skin-mate.

Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick

Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick cetaphil

You’ve heard it from your dermatologist, Cetaphil is your affordable ticket to healthy skin. Taking skin sensitivity into account, the Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick moisturizes without clogging pores, leaving behind a hydrated feel instead of grease and slime. This is in part due to the lack of harsh chemicals found in some sunscreens, including avobenzone, oxybenzone, and octinoxate; minerals, unlike those controversial three chemicals, complement sensitive skin.

Clear SPF 50 Sun Stick

shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+

There are few bad things about summer, but one of them may be the white cast that most lotion sunscreens leave in their wake. As a teen, there was no worse feeling than thinking you looked sexy, but really? You forgot to rub in your sunscreen. With Shiseido, this will never be a problem; the clear lotion (in an easy, breezy, portable sun stick form) uses WetForce and HeatForce technology to create an extra shield in extreme conditions.

BUY NOW – $29

Head to Toe Mineral Stick

Head To Toe SUNSCREEN stick from little hands hawaii

Impressive is an understatement when it comes to the eco-consciousness of sunscreen company Little Hands Hawaii. Not only are all products reef safe, their Head to Toe Mineral Sunscreen Stick is made of biodegradable materials to help prevent the spread of waste. On top of this, it comes in different shades apart from the standard paper white: light neutral (which has pink undertones), and medium neutral (for yellow, brown, and red undertones). The drawback to this addition of undertone specificity: a lack of shade range, excluding large percentages of the population. All people deserve blendable sunscreen — come on Little Hands!

BUY NOW – $28

Mineral Sunscreen Butter Stick SPF 50

all good SPF 50+ Sport Mineral Sunscreen Butter Stick

Life will certainly be all good if you invest in All Good’s Mineral sun stick. Silky smooth and ready to blend like butter on perfectly toasted bread, this sunblock (made with zinc oxide) sits on top of the skin so as to not clog those pesky pores. The use of natural ingredients like coconut oil, beeswax, vitamin E and jojoba oil help maintain reef and skin safety! P.S. If you apply before web surfing, your skin will be in the clear — that’s right, it protects against HEV, aka blue light. I don’t know about you, but that makes me pretty stoked!

Super Shield Mineral Fragrance Free Sun Sport Stick

Super Shield Mineral Fragrance Free Sunscreen Sport Stick SPF50

To love or not to love fragrance, that is the question. Well, for my sensitive skin (and nose) besties, the answer is, we’re just not that into you. Scented products contain synthetic chemicals that often irritate the skin and clog pores, something that many don’t want in their skin protectant. Babo Botanicals understands such concerns and uses plant based ingredients and their infamous ‘Nutri-Soothe™ Complex’ to generate healthy skin. It seems they have a crush on avocado oil, cocoa butter, jojoba seed oil, and shea butter, featuring them in many of their products.

BUY NOW – $12.99

Mineral Sunscreen Face Stick – SPF 30

Raw Elements Face Stick Certified Natural Sunscreen

Made with people in mind, Raw Elements formulates their products without common allergens like nuts, soy, or gluten. This struck me as particularly human because of the clear attention given to those who may struggle to find products that work for them. With a large list of certifications (Leaping Bunny, non GMO, all natural products, and so on) AND an easy, mess-free application, I see no reason not to run and grab this product — brb.

Away You Glow-Glow: My Routine With Glow Recipe

Let’s set the scene: The date is June 20th, and it is my best friend Hannah’s golden birthday (21 BABY). As we take our seats on the luxurious Long Island Rail Road, getting ready to celebrate legally, I am distracted by the euphoric glow emanating off of my friend’s face.

“Hannah,” I say. “Your face, it’s absolutely glowing. It looks like you have been blessed by the skin GODS.”

She smiles and blushes (brightening her already flawless skin, may I add) and bashfully admits, “This brand blew up on TikTok, it’s called Glow Recipe.

Glow Recipe: the name even sounds dazzling. I made a mental note to conduct some research and share this magical brand with my (super cool) boss, Tess. After Hannah’s and my day in the big city, I got right to work, googling what sorcery these products contained. What I found was a gold mine.

Instead of skin products promising perfection, Glow Recipe specializes in providing the consumer with the key to skin satisfaction. “We know that skin changes daily & we want to empower you to love and treat your skin based on its ever-changing needs. (Because that’s life!)” they state.

A post shared by Glow Recipe (@glowrecipe)

By using vegan and sustainable ingredients, Glow Recipe gladly touts it is Leaping Bunny certified, aka certifiably cruelty free! This is a major win, especially for a company that has reached viral status; having an honest skin care brand capture national attention (establishing a chokehold on us Gen Z-ers) can help the environment — even if that isn’t the consumer’s main intention.

I knew I needed to review Glow Recipe, so with Tess’ stamp of approval, I happily went shopping, looking out for the perfect three products.

What I Looked For

First, I was on the lookout for a cleanser; specifically one with hyaluronic acid, which helps heal wounds quicker and reduce scarring. Lo and behold, I found my one true love, the Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser, ripe (see what I did there) with blueberry extract, hyaluronic acid, and hydrating suds.

I then began to look for my second necessity, a pore-targeted toner, because those puppies are HUGE. Specifically, I was searching for one that wouldn’t be so harsh or drying on my skin. To my surprise, their signature (and only) toner promoted its pore tightening abilities by using watermelon extract. Entitled Watermelon Glow PHA+BHA Pore-Tight Toner, the liquid contains polyhydroxy acid (PHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which smooths skin, removes dead skin cells and decongests pores, respectively. Absolutely, add to cart.

Finally, it was time to find my show-stopper, a serum that hydrates and tackles my lovable acne prone skin. I was looking for Glow Recipe’s hero product to top off this review, and I didn’t want to wait ‘til the end of the night to find it. BUT just then, I saw it, brand new and calling out to me. The Strawberry Smooth BHA + AHA Salicylic Serum popped up on my screen. It’s good for all skin types, featuring strawberry extract to reduce the production of oil, azelaic acid liposome to help enact the salicylic acid (which calms reactive skin), and my personal favorite, allantoin to moisturize and protect skin.

And with that, I was sold. Adding that final item to my bag, I thanked my bank account and checked out.

Five days later, after patiently waiting, I received the notification that it had arrived. Giddy, I ran to the mailbox.

I opened the package and took out my three items (plus my two complimentary sample products). Beautiful, the packaging was sleek and cute and of all different colors (each representing which fruit was part of the ingredients). Curious, I uncapped each bottle to smell what all the hype was about.

Let me tell you, when I say these products smell delicious… I mean, if it were a hot summer’s day and each scent were an overpriced drink, I sure as hell would buy each and slurp ’em up.

I did no such thing, but did begin using all three before I went to bed that night.

My Nighttime Routine

First step: Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser

Tara holding Blueberry Bounce Cleanser from Glow Recipe

Within one use, my skin felt like a clean slate, as if my entire day were washed off from one rinse and lather. Immediately, I noticed a natural shine after drying, which never happens with my usual Cetaphil. Although my face was clean, it did not feel stiff and dry, which is a direct result of the hydrating properties in the cleanser. As I continue to use the wash (now at week three), the hydrating benefits are what are most impressive. I maintain a natural glow without an oily sheen — a wonderful change for my combination skin.

Second Step: Watermelon Glow PHA+BHA Pore-Tight Toner

Tara holding the Watermelon Glow PHA+BHA Pore-Tight Toner by Glow Recipe

When I began using this toner I was a little thrown off by the consistency, a bit thicker than my typical Burt’s Bees. The smell, as I mentioned before, was wonderful, but made me question how effective it would be on my face. The combination of cactus water and watermelon extract lead me to believe this toner may irritate the acne on my face. Upon application, the product left a bit of a sticky residue, and the places where pimples were present became a bit sore and red (which eventually did subside after a few minutes). My skepticism remained, so I decided to only use the toner once a day, instead of twice. This method proved effective because at the three week mark, my ever present pores seem to be minimized after use.

Third Step: Strawberry Smooth BHA + AHA Salicylic Serum

Tara holding Glow Recipe'sStrawberry Smooth BHA + AHA Salicylic Serum

It seemed as if my gut instinct to purchase this serum served me well. Light and magical, as soon as I pumped some of the contents on the back of my hand my spidey senses tingle (okay maybe it was really the hyaluronic acid). Rubbing the serum into my face instantly brightened my complexion, making me look awake even if I did not feel quite there yet. Putting it on before bed was another miracle, because in those 8 hours (okay maybe 6) of rest the azelaic acid liposome went to work reducing the dark marks where pimples once were. In love.

The Verdict

Tara holding all three Glow Recipe products.

SO, is Glow Recipe really worth the hype? Honestly, yes. Not only does the aesthetically pleasing packaging match the aesthetically pleasing results, it is a company with a mission. This is especially seen through their Glow for Good pledge, which helps develop diversity and inclusion, environmental preservation, and women owned businesses. They do this by pledging to donate $1M to organizations that embody these causes in hopes to elevate organizations who fight for humanity instead of the almighty dollar. Consumers pay attention to brands who stay true to their philanthropic roots, and will support brands that not only look out for themselves, but others too.

If you didn’t gather from my review’s takeaway by now, Glow Recipe has a shining, shimmering, gleaming, yes from me. From now on, I will never underestimate the power of a TikTok sensation (maybe, don’t quote me on that).

Is Salt Water Good For Hair And Skin? Here’s The 411

It’s summer time, which means plenty of beach days! If you love swimming in the ocean, you may be wondering: is salt water good for my skin and hair, or am I damaging them?

While it may seem like your hair is pulling a Jada Smith based on its entanglement post-swim, good news: you don’t have to give up that sea salt just because you have impossible knots and pruny skin. In fact, here’s why you should go diving even more before summer is over.

Salt Water for Your Hair

Okay, so those tangles you get? And that uncomfortable, straw-like feeling you get when your hair dries in the sun? That would be your hair shaft swelling with salt. And while, yes, too much swelling can be bad for your hair, salt water is still a fantastic addition to your routine.

First, that crusty feeling? It’s just the salt crystallizing in your hair – not your hair being stripped of precious oils. In fact, salt water is good for your hair in many ways, so long as you treat it afterward – just like any time you swim in a lake, or a pool, or shower with hard water, or… anything other than a standard shower with shampoo and conditioner.

Now, let’s go back to those nutrients in the deep sea. They’re just as good for your hair. For example, magnesium, potassium, and zinc create a healthy environment for your hair, encouraging growth and possibly stopping hair loss. After all, a healthy scalp = a happy scalp, does it not? (It does.) The exfoliation it provides to your scalp can help with gross buildup, too – it makes for a great natural shampoo.

And have you ever noticed that your hair looks full and wavy, perhaps even with perfect curls, after stepping out of the water? That’s because of that swelling. While too much can be bad, the right amount of salt water will give you that bombshell beach hair you’ve dreamt about.

Salt Water and Your Skin

I prune up like no other, but after reading about the benefits of salt water on skin, I’ll go wade in the water.

The biggest benefit of salt water: if you go into the deep end (like, 650-feet-deep-end), the water is filled with delicious nutrients – think magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium,… Basically, the amount of minerals that you get, thanks to a lack of light, plankton, and bacteria, are super beneficial. This is especially true for people who have skin conditions like eczema; a 2016 review investigated the benefits, finding that it may help soothe the skin condition.

It also potentially helps with psoriasis. So much so, that there’s a type of therapy that recommends incorporating sea salts in your baths – or, even better, bathing in saltwater sites directly. Though there are many theories as to why the salt water helps, most believe it has to do with either the warm temperature opening blood vessels or the suppression of the immune system in the skin.

Then, of course, there’s exfoliation. Salt scrubs are super popular for their exfoliation benefits, so it should come as no surprise that the salt water is just as good for your skin as Lush’s shower products. Salt water may also kill bacteria on your epidermis; combine that with acne-fighting exfoliation, and you have clear, happy, healthy skin.

Don’t Live Near Salt Water?

Okay, obviously there are plenty of people (read: millions) who don’t live near the beach, and summers are simply hot and sticky, with the occasional dip in the chlorine-filled pool. Luckily, there are so many products out there that will give your hair and skin the salt water dousing they desire. From salt sprays to salt scrubs, we recommend these!

8 Shimmer Body Oils To Give You Major Glow

Don’t have time to get out in the sun? Same – I’m working all of the time (please note how many all-nighters I pull. Actually, please don’t). So, I’ve begun using shimmer body oils to trick others into thinking I get that daily walk in.

Yes, I know I should go outside (leave me alone, QUILL team). But I have so much to do with so little time. And then there’s the fact that I don’t tan, just burn, so that radiant glow I desire? It only comes from body oils.

Sound like you? One, thank god, and two, I’ve got the solution for you. I present: eight shimmer body oils that will give you a glow without having to leave the office. Though, for both of our sakes, please leave the office. I’m living vicariously through you.

Coconut, argan, and marula oils come together to give you a hydrating, nourishing touch.

Shimmer Body Oil

Before we get into it, we’re gonna warn you just like Cee Cee’s Closet does: like many of these shimmery body oils, don’t use this body oil if you’re allergic to nuts. Okay, now that that’s out of the way… organic sweet almond, grapeseed, and moringa oil blend together and burst with hydration, while sunflower seed oil’s vitamin E helps protect and repair skin. Throw in organic hibiscus petals, and you have a shimmer body oil that nourishes – and smells fantastic, too.

If you don’t want to shine bright like a diamond, this Gold Shimmer Oil is more subtle than the rest. Kind of obsessed with the name, more obsessed with the shimmer this body oil gives you. Hydrating jojoba and avocado oils meet protective vitamin E, resulting in a shimmer body oil that can also be used in your hair – we love a good double duty product.

Sunday Riley is a brand I’m super excited to try, because all of their products are total hits among the QUILL audience (okay, and the team). Cruelty-free and clean, the dry shimmer body oil goes on and feels weightless – you get the glimmer without feeling weighed down. Vitamin C helps brighten, while enzyme CoQ10 enters the game and helps protect from all types of rays. Soooo… I’ll be buying this next, is what I’m saying.

Frank Body: Does It Scrub You The Wrong Way?

From the rise of social media, came the rise of ‘frank body,’ an Australian skin-care brand that affectionately calls you and 6 million others, Babe. Launched in prehistoric times (2013), the iconic Original Coffee Scrub was debuted. The internet went crazy for this bag full of coffee grounds, skyrocketing ‘frank body’ to the top of the skin-care scene. Landing an article in Forbes, ‘frank body’ became a multi-million dollar company showcasing their notably vegan, and sustainable products. Now that’s the type of company QUILL can get behind! With credentials like this, I just had to review ‘frank body’s’ newest adaptation of their iconic scrub; the Cacao Coffee Scrub.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Denisa☆SKINCARE&MAKEUP GEEK (@deni.miklosova)

The product features an impressive list of ingredients, headlining robusta coffee, cacao extract, and vitamin E. Using these VIP components together, your skin is promised exfoliation, hydration, and brightness. When it comes to my own skin, the voice of my dermatologist rings in my ears, preaching about my persistent acne, “stop touching!” and “use this $200 cream!” So, with the Cacao Coffee Scrub’s promise of fading stretch marks and toning uneven skin all at a price of $18.95, I was sold.

Upon setting eyes on my pastel purple package, my 13 year old self squealed with feminine delight; which gave me, now 21, pause. Upon further inspection, the words, “Warning: contents smell like cake and boys may fight over you like you’re the last slice.” made my recently broken heart recoil. Ugh. My new self-care routine is now taunting me – I do that enough myself! Taking it with a grain of sal– coffee bean, I decided violence is never the answer, but the smell of cake always is, so I must try it anyway.

I opened the package, and my nose was greeted with the dizzying smell of…chocolate flavored coffee beans. Ground until grainy and slightly moist to the touch, the scrub seemed to live up to the product description.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kelly (@beauty_by_birdy)

As instructed, I got naked, turned on the shower and took a handful of the scrub out of the waterproof pouch. The handful covered both my legs, but another two were needed for the rest of my body. As I began to rub the scrub into my skin, I basked in the exfoliating factors, thoroughly enjoying the rough feel of the grounds. As I washed away the areas that had been scrubbed, I immediately felt the hydrating factors. My skin, usually quite stale and dry, felt soft and flexible wherever the scrub had been. After one use, my skin felt like it had been reborn, genuinely defying all expectations.

The downsides? Although most ‘frank body’ products tout their acne benefits, when dealing with sensitive acne-prone skin scented scrubs are not your best bet (I learned this the hard way). Similar to a trip to the beach, when put on wet skin the grains stuck like sand to damp feet, making cleanup a bit tedious. This is further seen when it comes to drainage—since the grounds are not granules, they do not fully dissolve, leading to drain issues on my end.

‘frank body,’ you have truly thrown me for a loop. The Cacao Coffee Scrub primarily intrigued me with its ingredients, then confused me with its packaging/cryptic messaging, and finally surpassed my expectations with effectiveness.

As a sustainable, vegan, PETA approved, skin-care line, ‘frank body,’ hits many targets we have yet to see with mainstream products. This type of dedication is notable, and is a large part of why this company was reviewed. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding; when credible ingredients are used, the skin it is treating is effectively nurtured. I admire this brand for this reason and would recommend it for efficacy.

However, for a company that promotes inclusivity there are clear deficits. Skin is skin, no matter the gender, sexual orientation, race, or ethnicity. There is no need to gender products so bluntly. Unfortunately, the society we live in conditions us to perceive certain colors, and words to be feminine or masculine, which is especially prevalent in the world of marketing.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by frank body (@frank_bod)

Gaining mass popularity, ‘frank body’ should be mindful of their gender leaning products– which promotes a heteronormative culture. If the Cacao Coffee Scrub becomes part of someone’s self-care routine, messaging that emphasizes self-worth be determined by men is damaging. A product that is supposed to nourish, and rejuvenate should do just that, without projecting ideas about femininity. For this, I close my coffee scrub review by saying ‘frank body,’ do better.

I Tried Peace Out’s Blemish Balm, And My Skin Is Spotless

The chemistry of the skin is a very delicate thing; some people are more sensitive than others, and it’s all about finding the right skincare regimen.

Personally, I have always struggled with consistency and finding products that really work for me… until Tess sent me another “care” package (which at this point is more like a “guinea pig” package). Inside the Sephora bag was a product I had never heard of but would soon never be able to live without: Peace Out’s Blemish Balm.

Just like their brand name, Peace Out really tells blemishes to “Peace Out” with a plethora of products dedicated to giving you the best skin possible.

peace out skincare products

I really liked the Blemish Balm formula because it had a light exfoliation aspect to it, keeping my skin super clean and soft to the touch. I also noticed an immediate change in the appearance of my skin, which boosted my confidence and inspired me to write this review.

So, you have heard me rave about the product, but let’s break down the science of why it’s so great.

Made with oily and problematic-skin in mind, Blemish Balm combines physical (biodegradable cellulose) and chemical (salicylic acid) exfoliation into one powerhouse formula to help refine skin texture and minimize the appearance of pores, while ceramides help ensure skin is never left feeling stripped. It gently washes away dirt and preps skin to better absorb acne-fighting products, making it a perfect first step in your daily skincare routine!

So seriously, out of everything I have tested and recommended on this site, I sincerely hope you give this one a try. You won’t regret it!

I Tried Amazon’s Foreo Dupe, And I’m Actually Impressed

Foreo luna mini 2 vs. EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush, the infamous Amazon dupe – who comes out the winner? I thought the answer was obvious, so I was stoked when I managed to snag the Foreo luna mini 2 for half off from Amazon. The It Skincare Product was officially mine!

I reveled… until I hit the next page, and there was the popular Foreo dupe, the EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush, also half off. And, boom, the idea for this article-slash-review was born: could the $30 EZBasics Facial Cleansing Brush do what the revered $140 Foreo luna mini 2 does?

I had to know, so I scooped up the on-sale EZBASICS with my Foreo savings, waited two days, and skipped to my front door after I heard a knock on the door from the delivery driver.

So, what are my thoughts on when it comes to the OG Foreo luna mini 2 vs EZBASICS’ Facial Cleansing Brush dupe? Let me give you the rundown.

First Impressions

Before I begin, I’d like to state that I didn’t read the instructions. This was intentional! I wanted to see if one was more intuitive than the other. #science. Moving on.

First of all, the Foreo luna mini 2 is cute. Its shape is absolutely adorable, and the blue I snatched is deep-yet-pastel. The EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush, on the other hand… is also super cute. It’s in the shape of an oval, and the baby pink fits the ~vibe~ (because we’re talking about products that vibrate, get it? I’m funny). There are other color options for both, though pricing may vary; I chose from the cheapest options, because duh.

tess holding foreo luna mini 2
The Foreo Luna Mini 2
tess holding ezbasics facial cleansing brush, aka foreo dupe
The EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush

On the front of the Foreo is a blank circular indent, a plus sign, and a minus sign. The indent is meant to be the power button, though I’ll be honest: it wasn’t super obvious at first, and I checked the back to see if I was missing something.

The front of the EZBASICS is simpler. On the left, you’ll find a minus sign; on the right, there’s a button with the power symbol and an X. Obvious? Yeah. So, EZBASICS wins that war.

Now, for the (more) important part: the cleansing bristles. The Foreo luna mini 2 has a bunch of small, soft bristles on its front, meant for getting into the nitty gritty areas without irritating too much. On the back are wider, thicker bristles, meant to get in deep and remove that stubborn dirt from your pores.

It’s almost the same on the infamous Foreo dupe, but this is where the term “dupe” is emphasized. The front has soft, small bristles, but they aren’t as flexible as the luna mini 2’s. And I thought the EZBASICS was missing a deeper option; turns out the back is the deeper option, though it feels more like finger-gripping material than material meant to dig into your pores. So, Foreo comes out on top here.

Now, for the cleaning — aka the important part.

Hi, I’m Tess, your grimy-skinned Editor-in-Chief!

tess making a face and pointing at the camera as per usual

I snuck a peek at the luna mini 2’s instructions, so I would know how long the OG required: one minute, in which you divided your face into 15-second quadrants. I applied the same math to the EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush, because if Foreo says it can clean your face in one minute, you’ve gotta repeat the variable in the same review, you know?

To best test its cleansing capabilities, I wiped off a full face of makeup – yes, foundation included. I know: me? – with a makeup wipe, then found my favorite face wash to use with the products. I wanted to see which one did the real work, the “I just got home from a long day and can barely move, just get the makeup off, ugh” removal.

I started with the Foreo luna mini 2, dividing my face up: mid-cheek to forehead and mid-cheek to jaw line on both sides of my face. I decided to try out both sides of the beauty product – again, without reading instructions and going off of what felt like it was doing the most. I applied my face wash, careful not to lather – I wanted to see how well the luna mini 2 did with the least amount of effort.

tess trying the foreo luna mini 2

Using the smaller bristles first, I whisked away top layers of dead skin. I then flipped it over, letting the bigger bristles attack the gunk deeper in my pores. I did this on all four quadrants, which were separated by a pause in vibrations to say “move on, move on,” then rinsed my face off. The result: soft, flushed, but not irritated skin.

tess feeling her face which is super smooth after using the foreo luna mini 2

When rinsing off the Foreo, I noticed that the water was a little brown/black. Ew. But that meant it was getting the job done! As one final check, I wiped with a makeup wipe, and there were only a few flecks of leftover eyeliner and a faint spot or two of brown – nothing that the luna mini 2 could have done anything about, really.

Next: EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush trial time (after waiting a few hours in between washes)! I did the same as before: wiped off a full face of makeup, didn’t lather the face wash, and went to work.

One thing I do like about EZBASICS’ option: the shape allows for me to get in the crevices of my nose. Foreo has a precision tip, but the shape makes it awkward to reach those little creases. The EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush, on the other hand, capitalizes on its shape and fits into every nook and cranny with its precision tip.

ezbasics facial cleansing brush on nose

However, the backside, with the deep cleansing? Not great. It felt more like grips being rubbed against my face, and less like a deep massage into my pores. And after I rubbed down with a makeup wipe, there was a liiiiiittle more grime left on the sheet than compared to the OG. It wasn’t anything major, and I probably would have gone “this is the best EVER” had I not tried the luna mini 2 first. So, the Foreo dupe loses in the cleanliness category.

Post-”massage,” my face was soft, flush, and… well, a little irritated from those grips. Ugh.

EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush: Is The Foreo Dupe Worth It?

tess using foreo dupe (the ezbasics facial cleansing brush)

Long story short: yes… if the Foreo luna mini 2 isn’t discounted. In the end, I want to love the dupe more than the original, but Foreo truly #NailedIt with their luna mini 2 vs EZBASICS’ Facial Cleansing Brush. I can look past an awkward fit into my nose if it means removing 98.2% of the grossness on my face post-cake-face half-hearted wipe-down.

HOWEVER, if that Foreo luna mini 2 is gonna cost a chunk of your paycheck, go for the EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush. It gets the job done, though you might need to put a little elbow grease into your half-hearted wipe-down. But let’s be real: less than $30 + elbow grease is a lot nicer on the wallet than $140.

In summary: they both work! But Foreo knew what they were doing, and they executed it perfectly. For that reason, I will be buying the Foreo luna mini 2 forever… when it’s on sale, that is. And when it’s not? I’ve got my EZBASICS Facial Cleansing Brush as solid-B back-up.

These Are The Clippers You Need For Perfect Nails

Admission: I was a nail-biter, and I only located my nail clippers a year ago for a gnarly hangnail.

Look, I’m not proud of this. But I had never been able to master nail clippers. Dumb? Yup! But it always hurt, or the angle was awkward, or my nail was too strong for my drugstore clippers to cut through. (I get it from my dad’s side of the family.)

So biting, naturally. Because that’s so much better. (This is sarcasm, I am aware that it is disgusting.)

Guess what, y’all: I was using the wrong. Frickin. Nail clippers.

I didn’t even know that was possible. I assumed the $2.99 pair I got from CVS was the only design available, so why spend more money? But I am a fool – there are tons of nail clippers for all types of nails.

I now use nippers, and my poor clubbed toes and fingers are grateful. Don’t know what nippers are? Welcome to the article of a much more knowledgeable Tess! I’m here to give you the lowdown on the different types of nail clippers, plus the highest-quality options out there. Let’s get into it.

Lever-Type Clippers

These are the standard clippers you’ll see in stores everywhere, selling for mere dollars in drugstores and gas stations, with nicer pairs selling in places like Sephora and Target. They’re the universally-loved type, able to clip any nail you need. And that weird, broken nail that kinda hurts? It’ll slice through without tugging.

On top of this, many come with slide-out cleaners, plus a file. The multi-use tool makes it so easy to clean up unsightly nails and prep you for a mini at-home manicure, so it’s no surprise you’ll find this type of clipper above any other.

It was the lever-type clipper that was responsible for hurting my nails for all of those years. Turns out I just had to invest in higher quality pairs. (Duh, past Tess.)

Angled Nail Clippers

Angled nail clippers. Where were those when I needed them? These nail clippers are the perfect types for those hard-to-reach spots, like that little hangnail on your pinky or that close-to-the-finger rough edge that you just can’t seem to file down.

I personally love these for toenails, because you can clip them super easily. That crossing-your-legs-on-the-toilet position is uncomfortable after awhile, and getting your toes to face the right direction for longer than 20 seconds without cramping up is annoying. Angled clippers make it easy to slice without contortions.

That ingrown toenail hurts like a bitch, right? At least ease the pain a little (if not entirely, if you catch it soon enough and aren’t afraid of digging) with a nipper, which helps clip nails that have curved past the point of no return.

The pointy tip digs in for a precise grab-and-clip, helping to “nip” at those painful daggers. Podiatrists often use nippers when they’re working on ingrowns that aren’t toooo bad or require complete removal of the nail, so you can grab a pair yourself if you know what you’re doing.

If you have super thick nails like myself, nippers are also great to cut through that strong keratin – these are the types I use now for both fingernails and toenails.

Scissor Clippers

Scissor clippers are similar to lever clippers, because they’re both meant to make clean cuts across the nail. Scissor clippers give you more control, and because you go at your nails from the side to cut, you’re causing less trauma to the nail.

When using scissor clippers, make sure it’s one seamless motion across the nail, rather than short, jagged cuts. It’s like cutting wrapping paper – it may not slide quite like scissors against the paper, but we all see what happens when we make choppy cuts. And cut allllll the way to the end – no biting or tearing! – for a flawless finish.

Other Nail Clippers

There are, of course, other nail clippers. Some are for those who need some help gripping; others for those who can’t see as well. If you have thick nails, you might need a wider-opening pair of clippers. And for those with limited mobility, rotary nail clippers can be ultra important for getting a solid slice. There are even clippers for lefties. If you do your research, you’ll find the perfect nail clippers for your needs!

Best Overall: Nail Clippers Set

lever type nail clippers

Five star review: “We’ve bought several pairs of nail clippers recently from Walmart and all of them sucked. We were having the worst luck finding clippers that didn’t break and that didn’t leave the nails torn up from the clip. Bought these and LOVED them. Work perfectly, great price, and came in a convenient little tin that holds both pairs.”

10 Nail Polish Remover Pads To Keep Your Nails Clean

When you’re traveling, I cannot recommend leaving the bottle of acetone at home and bringing nail polish remover pads and wipes instead.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by côte (@coteshop)

Think about it: you only need one little packet, rather than a bottle and cotton pads. They’re small enough to bring anywhere. And not all of them are acetone-based, so you’re not resigned to dry nails!

When doing keyword research, I decided to try some out and see if there was an article worth writing. So, I present to you: a list of nail polish remover pads that will keep your nails happy and wipe them down like no polish was there in the first place!

ella + mila soy nail polish remover wipes unscented

Removing nail polish can seriously damage the strength of your nails, which is why Ella + Mila have filled theirs with vitamins. A, C, and E come together to keep your nail beds solid and supple. The pads are soy-based, not acetone-based, making removal a gentle process, and they’re unscented.

Karma Soy Oil Nail Polish Remover Wipes

Diamond Wipes Acetone Nail Polish Remover Pads

Takeoff Towels Non Acetone Nail Polish Remover

cote nail polish remover pads

We love côte at QUILL, and their non-acetone towels are listed last, but certainly are not least. Some non-acetone-based nail polish remover pads can leave a chalky residue, even if they aren’t drying out your nail beds. Not the case here – wipe and feel clean, rather than half-washed.

22 Fragrances That Are Neither Masculine Nor Feminine – Just Pleasant

Androgynous perfumes are important at QUILL. So often, scents are “for men” and “for women,” despite working for ANY gender. Why must vanilla and florals be for women, or leather and cedarwood be for men? Why must they be for men or for women when gender identities are expansive, and unisex perfumes are… well, ALL perfumes?

We ask these questions a lot, and we hope to someday find answers. For now, however, we are here to share products that won’t alienate anyone or cause gender dysphoria when searching for an eyeshadow palette – or, in this case, a gender neutral fragrance.

So, with that mission at top of mind, here are QUILL’s 19 favorite androgynous perfumes, because smelling bad? It’s just not an option.

ck one gender neutral fragrance

Many know of the iconic brand for its gendered products, but they have an entire unisex section that leaves gender out of the picture. Included: their CK One fragrance, which doesn’t lean toward masculine or feminine at all. Instead, smell top notes of sweet pineapple and earthy bergamot, middle notes of spicy nutmeg and fresh flowers, and base notes of musk and amber. Gender who?

L’Éclat Eau de Parfum Spray

rituals l'eclat unisex perfume

We love a perfume that works as a base to layer with, and this unisex option is exactly that. At its core, the perfume is far from bland – but notes of smooth sandalwood and citrus-floral neroli create a space perfect for a topper. Perhaps a sweet wild rose, inviting a scent of romance? Or maybe leather, evoking images of a booth in the back of an empty bar? Or, even, a combo of the two: a secret date night? With the base notes, you can bring any image to life.

BUY NOW – $42.08 (1.6 oz.)

non gender specific flooid gender neutral fragrance

We love everything Fluide, and now, we love everything Flooid, too! Non Gender Specific (can’t get enough of that name, tbh) has one product we can’t get enough of: this unisex perfume, because they’ve done damn well at making it smell… well, gender neutral. Top notes are zesty, with yellow citrus, orange, and grapefruit; middle notes are warm, with amber and patchouli; and base notes literally earth the perfume, courtesy of sweet cedarwood, pine bark, and mossy undertones.

Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

jo malone ocean inspired wood sage sea salt unisex perfume

I’m blessed to live by the ocean – I’m reminded of this every time a friend complains that they just want to drive along the coast. That’s why I’ve decided to gift all of my friends Jo Malone’s Sea Salt Cologne, thanks to notes that practically taste like salt air. Of course, the heart note is sea salt – it’s inspired by the ocean, after all! – with a musky, nutty top note of ambrette seed and an earthy base note of sage.

ambery cherry dossier gender neutral perfume

Don’t want to shell out an excessive amount of $$ on a scent you don’t know if you’ll like? Yeah, same. If you’ve been wondering what Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry smells like, consider trying Dossier’s Ambery Cherry instead, with strong notes of cherry and almond hitting you at first spray. The initial burst settles in with notes of spices cinnamon and clove and flowers rose and jasmine. Cap it off with vanilla and Peru balm, and you have the perfect dupe.

BUY NOW – $49 (1.7 oz.)

Santal 33 Eau de Parfum

le labo santal 33

Le Labo is a classic company, offering androgynous perfumes that stray from any hint of gender. My personal preference is Santal 33, as I consider it one of the brand’s most gender neutral scents. Violet accord marries cardamom at top, while iris and ambrox dance in the middle. At the base, cedarwood, leather, and sandalwood ground the scent. The result: a fragrance that belongs in the men’s, women’s, and enbies’ aisles.

suganami from snif androgynous fragrance

Snif allows you to order their unisex fragrances from the comfort of your home, free of spritzing sales people – choose three fragrances, try them out, then send back the ones you don’t want… and only pay for what you keep. Recently, Snif has released limited-edition Suganami, a scent that “knows no gender.” The exquisite, sleek, metallic Suganami bottle houses the experience of walking barefoot through a mossy green forest, deeply inhaling the spicy earthiness of your surroundings.

Ginger Essence™ Sensuous Skin Scent

origins ginger essence gender neutral fragrance

As indicated by the title, ginger is the dominating heart note here. The fiery, spicy note is complemented by zesty bergamot, lemon, and lime, bringing life and a sense of cool to this formula. The gender neutral perfume is perfectly balanced – not too intense nor too tranquil. It doesn’t lean toward one gender, either, so anyone can feel comfortable wearing the perfume – after all, who doesn’t love ginger met with refreshing contrast?

BUY NOW – $58.65 (3.4 oz.)

dossier woody tobacco gender neutral fragrance

Dossier again, because their scents are just so good! Another reason you may want a Dossier perfume: you need a backup for travel, and you don’t want to leave your expensive Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club at a hotel across the country. Blond wood and tobacco leaves may seem masculine, but add in the sweetness of lemon and pink pepper, plus neutral dry fruits and rum, and you have a scent that isn’t gendered – just evocative of a holiday night at the local jazz club.

BUY NOW – $39 (1.7 oz.)

Cannabis Eau de Parfum

malin and goetz cannabis perfume

Cannabis has a strong scent, and it’s pretty polarizing (as is the topic of cannabis, but that’s a different conversation, anywayyyyy). But (MALIN+GOETZ) describe the scent as a “lazy afternoon” that reminds you of “fading innocence” and “endless possibilities,” and that’s accurate. Spicy herbs twist with a smokiness that hangs in the air – what does that sound like? Add in subtle white floral notes for a hint of sweetness and freshness to break up the hotboxing of your body.

BUY NOW – $95 (1.7 oz.)

oakcha sorcery unisex perfume

Oakcha is also very gender-neutral in their branding, which QUILL appreciates. Sorcery is a popular choice, and the androgynous perfume is universally beloved – just check out 4.7 stars from almost 300 reviews. Inspired by dark nights spent practicing spells in the moonlight, embrace the spirit of magic when you wear notes of tropical flowers, vanilla, Indian rose, musky Ambergris, and almonds.

BUY NOW – $39.95 (1 oz.)

Un Jardin sur le Nil

un jardin di nil gender neutral fragrance

Un Jardin sur le Nil’s inspiration is a walk down the Aswan Nile, taking in the bright and awakening scents that guide you along the river. Green mango and lotus give the unisex perfume a kick, while calamus is an almost dusty note – like walking through an Egyptian desert? Sycamore wood is at the base, with a blend of incense tying together the perfume with a bow. It’s exotic and euphoric in a bottle for all.

BUY NOW – $140 (3.3 oz.)

Madewell Beau Fragrance

beau madewell gender neutral fragrance

The unisex Beau can be shared with a beau, or you can keep it to yourself as a statement of self love. It’s a global scent, with notes including palo santo wood, coconut, white flowers, and cedar. It describes itself as “Amber Woods,” and while that sounds accurate, I’d argue that the scent of coconut is more of an ode to the sea. Regardless, you’ll feel cultured when you wear this fragrance, and the world will think so, too.

BUY NOW – $65 (1.7 oz.)

Eau Parfumée Au Thé Vert Eau de Cologne

bvlgari au vert unisex perfume

BVLGARI’s Eau Parfumeé collection is specifically meant for all genders – it’s not implied, but stated. This unisex perfume is a callback to the original Au Vert from 1992, aka the first tea fragrance. Bright and earthy meet warm and sensual; Italian bergamot citrus intertwines at the heart with a green tea accord, then meets with beeswax and tonka bean. Recalling the region of Uji in Japan – specifically, its “Precious Dew” green tea – you’ll feel classy as hell in this iconic fragrance.

BUY NOW – $97.75 (2.5 oz.)

HERETIC bergamusk unisex perfume

Yes, this is THE Heretic, who creates a perfume that smells like Gwyneth Paltrow’s orgasm. As tempting as it was to include it, Bergamusk is also naturally alluring, just like you, with its musky qualities being derived from the aphrodisiac ambrettolide. Earthy bergamot is paired with lavender, thyme, lime, and verbena on top, while middle notes are contrasting jasmine and cedar. Base notes round out the intoxicating scent with the sensual ambretollide musk. Send yourself to summer in southern Calabria, because you deserve it.

BUY NOW – $165 (1.7 oz.)

Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum

tom ford soleil blanc unisex perfume

Tom Ford, we mentioned a dupe for your Cherry perfume, but we have to include your unisex OG Soleil Blanc (translation: “White Sunlight”). It’s the perfect androgynous perfume for spring, with fresh ylang ylang and coconut blooming from sultry, spicy cardamom and a floral amber. It’s luxurious, it’s sensual, it’s that bright morning sun waking you up in a stranger’s hotel bed. Do you leave a note? Yes… but you leave the signature blank.

BUY NOW – $175 (1 oz.)

Cape Heartache

imaginary authors cape heartache unisex fragrance

Each Imaginary Authors scent is accompanied by the synopsis of its “story” and written instructions on when to best wear the unisex fragrance. For the bold adventurer, take a journey through dense mountain fog and firs to Cape Heartache. Douglas firs and pine resin mingle with notes of vanilla and mountain fog, evoking the memory of Christmastime in one sniff.

BUY NOW – $95 (1.7 oz.)

dedcool androgynous fragrance 1 "taunt"

“Taunt” those around you with your intoxicating existence, in part due to Dedcool’s unisex perfume. (We said in part – you as a person are just as intoxicating, don’t worry.) We love the perfume’s packaging, first and foremost: a clear bottle with a simple barcode and emphasis on being “unisex.” The smell is flirtatious, with fresh notes of dew and bergamot meeting base notes of sweet vanilla and full amber. Sitting right in the middle: a floral blend, lightening the entire fragrance up.

BUY NOW – $90 (1.7 oz.)

Ind. For Her For Him Unisex Perfume

skin by urban outfitters androgynous fragrance

Lovin’ you for your progressive nature, Urban Outfitters – where the other millennial fashion brands and their androgynous perfumes at? Scents change like a revolving door; currently, the three offered are “Skin,” “Fresh,” and “Sandalwood.” Sandalwood smells of its name, while Fresh smells like bergamot, orange flower, and vetiver. And then there’s Skin, which is exactly how you’d like to smell post-wash, with hints of jasmine and cedar mingling with the scent of natural musk.

BUY NOW – $18 (1.35 oz.)

ROOK perfumes undergrowth

Undergrowth sounds weird upon first listen: what did she just say? But get your mind out of the gutter (just me?) and imagine yourself pushing your fingers through the dirt as you plant your favorite flowers – that’s Undergrowth. As you spray, you’ll enjoy soil, garden mint, and grass: the upper ground you’re about to dig into. In the middle, smells like orris remind you of what you’re planting. Finally, as you hit the bottom, you’ll become familiar with Undergrowth’s base notes: petrichor and Patchouli Indonesia, plus vetiver and white musk.

BUY NOW – $120 (1.7 0z.)

vahy isle of blanc androgynous fragrance

Obvs we included Tom Ford’s version of Blanc, but we couldn’t resist including Vahy’s Isle of Blanc, too! Vahy’s androgynous fragrance smells less like citrus, acidic and oceanic compared to the spice of Tom Ford’s Soleil Blanc. While we describe Ford’s as the blank note you leave a stranger the morning after, Isle of Blanc is more going out to brunch the morning after, perhaps somewhere overlooking the coast on a bright, sunny day – no need for a note at all.

BUY NOW – $162.90 (1.7 oz.)

STORIES tells tales with their gender neutral fragrances, and this one describes a stroll through a ghost town. Imagine walking barefoot in a garden, hit by sweet Bulgarian Rose blended with spicy ginger, cardamom, and green tea. Next in the blend, catch whiffs of honey tobacco and cedarwood, warm and cozy, followed by notes of opoponax, tonka bean and patchouli – the old liquor store on the corner, or maybe a mix of a passerby’s cologne and cigarettes? Cap the fragrance off with base notes of white amber and musk, like a warm evening, and you have an entire story bottled up.
