As somebody who has oily skin, I am constantly dreading wearing makeup during the summer. It’s way too hot to even function, and if I move any kind of muscle, my face looks like it’s been drenched in grease just seconds after, no matter how much I try to brush up my appearance.
You just can’t imagine the feeling I got when I first heard of the “marinated makeup” trend that’s been going around. My immediate thoughts had to do with my skin being slick and gross from having makeup on all day, but to my surprise, this might be a look I’d love to go for.
What Is Marinated Makeup?
Marinated makeup is all about letting your makeup “marinate” on your face in order for it to look its best. It’s a grungy look, one that enhances your features once the products sit on your skin after hours of wear. A true nighttime look.
The trend started making its way through TikTok, of course, and the key to it is this…
That’s more than enough for me. I ditched the foundation and base layers and went heavy with the eyeliner and smokiness (which, actually, now that I think about it, is literally just my everyday makeup). My inspiration is the grunge-looking queen herself, beabadoobee.
Her video with Vogue on her makeup routine is the one you want to follow; faux freckles, liner and lashes, a smidge of lip tint, and not much else. It really is that simple!
But for those of you who don’t want to ditch the bases, TikTok user @shaaynemarie has a quick routine for concealer that makes it ultimately blendable for that flawless finish. Just let your concealer or base (we recommend a breathable one, like a tinted moisturizer) sit on your skin for 5-10 minutes, and blend it out with either your hands or a beauty sponge.
You’ll notice your skin glows more. It’ll even look better as the day goes on, because, as Vogue puts it, the point of marinated makeup is for it to look “lived in.”
After that, you can go ahead and get started on your grungy look.
The best part about this is that it can be dressed up and down; I could go to school with it just fine, then hit the nightclubs right after, all in a day’s work of this simple routine.
After you choose whether or not to wear foundation/concealer, take some eyeliner and wing it out. Smudge out your waterline too, and if you want to go all the way, use dark eyeshadow to very subtly blend out the eyeliner to make it look messy (in a perfect way, of course). You can also choose to add lashes to really amp up the grunge-iness.
You can use henna or a brown pencil liner to dot some faux freckles across your nose bridge and cheekbones, and if you want, add a little bit of blush. Finish up the look with a lip tint, and you’re all done.
Products For The Marinated Makeup Look
Here’s a list of products that will help you achieve this look! It’s very beginner-friendly, so don’t sweat too much on breaking the bank for these products. Take a visit to your nearest drug store and you’ll be set.

I love revolutionary makeup products as much as the next person, but oftentimes I am humbled by what I am – a college student. A broke one, that is, so I unfortunately can’t be spending $42 on the Kosas Tinted Face Oil — meaning I’m reliant on dupes.
That I can’t hold the archetype in my hand is a damn shame, because everything about it just seems so nice. It’s light coverage with a bunch of whole ingredients that won’t make you feel too bad about coating your entire face in it. It’s got avocado oil for moisturizing, jojoba oil for a soothing aspect, and both meadowfoam and rosehip seed oils to brighten and plumpen your look to be more youthful. It gives you that perfect effortless and dewy look!
Are you sold, but not so committed to the price? Luckily for you, I’m still a baddie on a budget (sometimes), and we here at QUILL have compiled a list of Tinted Face Oil dupes for you all to check out — no Kosas required.
Tower 28 Beauty’s SunnyDays Tinted Sunscreen is a great start to this list. It’s got SPF to protect your skin, and also includes other clean ingredients to keep your face clean. Prickly pear extract is one of those, and helps repair the skin barrier while also protecting it from blue-light pollution. White sage extract is another ingredient that stands out; it helps with irritation and is supposedly soothing. What I also love about it is that it’s vegan and reef-safe, which is kind of hard these days to find with SPF!
Another SPF tint coming your way. Saie’s Slip Tint Dewy Moisturizer is a perfect dupe for that light coverage look that Kosas’ Tinted Face Oil is serving. It’s a reputable one, too, ‘cuz it actually won Allure 2021’s Clean Beauty category! Not only is it clean, but it’s also hydrating and takes care of your skin; the hyaluronic acid will help retain moisture, and is also paired with pansy flower to really lock in that hydration.
Rare Beauty’s a real winner in our books. Their tinted moisturizer boasts a good shade range, and is also light coverage for that effortless look. This product happens to be vegan and cruelty-free, and is free of parabens! They’ve been doing their research too – in a study they conducted, 100% of triers said it has a super smooth application, and 94% say it evens out your skin tone naturally!
tarte’s got a real treat for us; their Maracuja Tinted Moisturizer is a vegan product that provides a sheer coverage that supposedly lasts for 12 hours! tarte wants you to know that this product is finger-application-friendly, and that its ingredient list is also curated to make sure it matches your skincare routine. It has hyaluronic acid and turmeric root extract to hydrate and soothe your skin from redness. It also has Maracuja oil, which contains vitamin C and great fatty acids to really elevate the glow in your face.
Here’s another sheer-coverage moisturizer for the books. Reviewers say it’s perfect for everyday makeup, and offers a glow for your radiant skin. Surprisingly, the ingredients for this tinted moisturizer are all oil-free, yet still provide hydration! This Tinted Face Oil dupe is free of sulfates, parabens, formaldehydes, and mineral oil, just to name a few – this ingredient list is pretty impressive, like Kosas’. It’s primer-infused so it really stays on your skin, all while protecting it from the sun! It has SPF 25 and also has hyaluronic acid as well.
PÜR’s Tinted Moisturizer is another product that is vegan and cruelty-free. It’s a 4-in-1 product; it moisturizes, primes, covers, and provides SPF! If you’re strapped for time like me and constantly buried in textbooks and exam-prep, then this is the product for you. It’s got sodium hyaluronate to firm up your skin, and even has retinol for an age-reducing look; you’ll save a lot of time using this one.
Morphe’s Glowstunner Tinted Moisturizer has SPF 30 in it to really protect your face from those rays! It’s even reef-safe, and provides hydration for up to 24 hours. Like the other great products on here, it’s also free of oils and parabens as well. It’s even got lactic acid to even out your complexion, and allantoin for inflammation. There’s also skin-healthy antioxidants in there; citric acid and Vitamin E has got your back with this product. And all for $18?! Count me in.
This serum is breathable, and more on the supportive side for your skin. It’s a natural tint, and provides a light coverage for the real you. It’s cruelty-free and vegan, and is even a little more environmentally conscious. It’s packed with a 50% PCR bottle and cap, which is fantastic for recycling. It has vegan collagen, hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin C, which is great for gentle application. No abrasiveness here, folks. The best part? It’s only $14.
Winky Lux has done it again; their White Tea Tinted Veil has an average rating of 4.7 stars, and for good reason, too! It’s an SPF 30 tint, and is infused with white tea and pomegranate to nourish and brighten your skin. Reviewers say that it’s an awesome product for oily skin, which is great for me — I love a dewy look, but often can’t find products for my own skin type. This dupe would be absolutely perfect if their shade range provided more options, so Kosas’ Tinted Face Oil wins in that category.
This tinted moisturizer is rich in antioxidants and really provides long-lasting moisture. It’s a smooth application with only natural ingredients too! Burt’s Bees sells on the environmentally-safe content list; they say that this product is formulated without environmental aggressors, and contains 98.8% ingredients that are of natural origin. This dupe of Kosas’ Tinted Face Oil is only available in two shades currently, but if your skin tone matches one, we recommend snagging it.
Neutrogena fans all know and rave about their Hydro Boost sunscreen. Good news for you guys; you can get their same hydro boosting technology in this light foundation, making it the dream dupe for Kosas’ Tinted Face Oil! This is a clean product paired with hyaluronic acid and is amazing for dry skin. It has a lightweight water gel formula, so it really feels cool and fresh on your face. Reviewers say that it isn’t cakey or tacky, and is perfectly moisturizing!
Beauty OGs know that Maybelline was there for us since the beginning. They’re still at it, because their Dream Fresh BB Cream is an 8-in-1 product. Did I read that right? It apparently is all about skin health because it: hydrates, brightens, provides SPF 30, blurs imperfections, smooths, enhances, has oil-free ingredients, and evens skin tone. This light coverage BB cream is all about creating a blurring effect to really enhance your face’s best features. Now this is an all-in-one if I’ve ever seen it.
I’m a sucker for a good combo product. Eyeliner and eyeshadow pencils? Gimme. Brow and mascara gels? I’ll take ‘em. So, when I heard about lip and cheek tint duos, I knew I had to get in on the fad. After all, cutting down my time in the morning? A goal of mine always.
If this sounds like you, I’ve gathered my 16 favorite lip-cheek duos that will help you slow down in the morning, because, really, who wants to waste five minutes when you could save them instead?

I received this in the mail in Berry, and I was so excited to try it out — and I was right to excitedly anticipate its arrival. Milk’s lip-cheek tint is a classic, one of the OGs. You can thank its ultra-hydrating ingredients for the creamy, non-drying formula: a combo of mango butter, avocado oil, and apricot oil. It’s vegan, cruelty-free, and paraben-free, too, so you can feel safe and ethical about what you’re wearing.
We love Smashbox over here — just read Marissa’s review of their liquid lipstick! Their primer-infused cream cheek and lip tint is perfect for those who want a flush in a matte finish. The 2-in-1 gives you blendable and buildable capabilities, and it’s infused with a rich Primer Oil Complex — aka a blend of jojoba, sunflower, and apricot oils — for comfy coverage. The formula glides on smoothly, then settles into a powder-like matte finish that helps create a blurred, soft-focus look.
Swipe on some healthy goodness with Pixi by Petra’s On-the-Glow Blush. This hydrating solid 2-in-1 tint is built to blend for a natural finish on cheeks and lips. Enriched with botanicals and fruit extracts to create a nourishing, protective base, the flattering colors give you a just-been-kissed glow. This product is perfect for boss bbs on the g(l)o(w) who want to add a pop of color to their cheeks and lips without having to spend too much time on makeup. Go from desk to drinks with one application of this multi-use stick!
Perk Up is the perfect name for a cheek-lip tint. After all, when you’ve just woken up, are sick, or look ungodly after a hangover, what’s the first thing you want? (Aside from moisturizer. Please put that moisturizer on first.) A little color. Morphe’s ingredients list looks kind of intimidating, but all are in there to soften and condition. Mica adds a little shimmer, because why not?
While the others are creams, Benefit’s cheek-lip tint is actually a stain – so it goes on, and it stays on for a while. Gogotint is the latest lip-cheek stain, coming in a cheery cherry-red, giving you a flush that can’t be missed. Reviews say a little goes a long way, so don’t get too excited unless you want to look a lil clown-like.
Fluide’s Universal Gloss is universal in two ways: one, anybody can wear it, and two, it can go everywhere. Fluide recommends applying the dewy tint to your entire face – yep, including your lids, it’s a 3-in-1! – and there are currently three shades available. Shine bright like a diamond, and keep checking back for Elysium and Rain to come back into stock.
This bright, bold lip-cheek-eye (yep, 3-in-1!) tint bursts with creativity, so you can let your imagination run wild. The clean cream formula has a matte finish and is shimmer-free. This clean, vegan, cruelty-free product’s ingredients list makes it shine; find softening plant squalane, hydration-locking hyaluronic acid, and maracuja extract to nourish the face. With this product, you get all the benefits of a cheek, lip, and eye tint in one easy-to-apply, long-wearing product!
Freck is LGBTQ+-owned, so you know we already love the brand – the inclusivity is the cherry on top. These color choices are all gorg – a subtle peach, soft rust, and deep berry make up the collection, giving you three shades to brighten your face. Cheekslime is a weird name, for sure, but it’s because of the formula: it’s so creamy, it slides right on, rather than feeling like putty.
Saie “hello” to a blush that’s technically meant for your cheeks, but is so damn flattering, you can wear it anywhere you want that extra flush. Bonus: the formula is ultra-protective against environmental stressors, thanks to antioxidant-filled ingredients like white mulberry root extract, comfrey leaf extract, and elderberry fruit extract.
This lip & cheek tint is a two-in-one lip balm and cheek blush that provides light coverage and a natural finish. The paraben-free formula is filled with hyaluronic acid, known for its hydrating and radiance-inducing properties, as well as orange blossom and shea butter to help calm and moisturize the skin. This ultra-blendable, balmy tint glides on effortlessly to stain your lips and cheeks with sheer color for a natural flush.
r.e.m. offers a futuristic packaging take on the lip-and-cheek stick – while most are in neutral, cylindrical containers, r.e.m. goes spaceship-centric. Formula-wise, Eclipse comes with (inter)stellar ingredients to give you a hydrating glow – jojoba seed oil and grape fruit extracts work together to fight aging and provide moisture to all skin types.
Okay, so I don’t know about you, but shea butter is one of my favorite ingredients. It’s so nourishing – it feels like a hug to the skin. That’s why I love LIQUE’s buildable cheek-lip tint, which has a ton of shea butter to coddle. It also has rosehip oil, which helps to reduce inflammation and bring forth your most radiant skin.
Sometimes you don’t want a monochromatic look, and that’s totally understandable. Jouer Cosmetics heard you loud and clear, and they understood the assignment. Their Cheek-Lip Duos have slightly different shades on each end, so you have one lighter and one deeper option. Their Amelie Blush and Bloom comes with a clear end – perfect for radiance minus the red.
Here at QUILL, we’re big on sustainability – just check out our resident mermaid’s eco-conscious articles! It’s why we love Kjaer Weis’ Refillable Lip Tint: gorgeous, good ingredients, multi-use despite the name, and planet-lovin’ packaging all at once. Just choose your colors, your container, and revel in the fact that you can compost or recycle at the end of its lifespan.
W3LL PEOPLE’S multi-use blush is plant-based, so you won’t find any icky ingredients in there – especially great if you have sensitive skin. It’s vegan and cruelty-free, starring green tea to protect from free radicals, plus sunflower seed oil and avocado oil to keep skin hydrated and happy with their fatty acids. If you’re curious about their ingredient list, you’re able to hover over each ingredient for a description of what it does, so you know exactly what you’re putting on your skin.
This is, without a doubt, the most nourishing lip-cheek tint you’re going to put on your face. The color looks deep, but it rubs into your skin as a flattering, subtle blush – not the bold you’ll be expecting. Ingredients include anti-inflammatory shea butter; softening vitamin E; and jojoba and rosehip seed oils for their antioxidants and fatty acids.
Good news regarding fall’s berry trend: no matter your skin tone, you can rock this lipstick color!
You heard me right. While reds, oranges, and pinks are often decided on by skin tone, berry lipstick is fair- and melanin-friendly. And I’m not talking that subtle pink or bright cherry – I’m talking purples, blue undertones, maybe even some brown… or black, if you’re feeling bold.
Have I sold you on berry colored lipstick yet? Because if not, these options I’m about to list will do just that. Yes, you are totally welcome to blame me when you fall in love. I’ll take the fall.
Saie’s lipstick is a boldly berry and miraculously matte color, but that doesn’t mean it’ll dry you out. Instead, this lipstick is filled with ultra-nourishing ingredients – think hydration-locking hyaluronic acid, moisturizing olive oil, and berry fruit wax for that blurred effect. Congrats, your pout looks extra kissable… and actually is, too.
There is legit nothing better than two-day shipping, especially when you have an event and can’t find that berry lipstick at the last minute… or, even worse, totally forget to pack it. Revlon’s liquid lipstick comes in 21 satin finishes, and despite its less-than-$10 price tag, the ingredients are stellar: vitamin E works together with black currant seed oil to give your lips total protection.
Who would we be if we didn’t include about-face, especially with the release of af94? Can’t forget to give the oldies some love! Paint It Matte comes in nudes and brights, but it’s the Saint Sangria that gives the lipstick a spot on this list. While the ingredients list isn’t necessarily a big deal (love you Halsey), the vegan formula only requires one swipe for a look that lasts all night.
You’re damn right I chased this all the way to Target, because I had to include it, and we’re all weak for Target. NYX’s lipstick gives you plenty of options for a berry color, and the names are fun too – Dirty Talk? Love is a Drug? Yeah, love it. Infused with mango and shea butters to nourish your mouth, your lips will feel totally taken care of.
If there’s any lipstick to get stuck on anyone’s collar, choose a berry from r.e.m by Ms. Grande (or is it Mrs. Gomez? Or both?). To feel like a boss ass babe – no matter your gender! – rock ceo, which is a dark wine red perfect for leaving a stain. And when it comes to ingredients, you’ll be thrilled to know there’s protective vitamin E, moisturizing and rejuvenating milk thistle seed oil, and hyaluronic-alternative sodium hyaluronate to lock in all that moisture.
Ah, Dior, you give so many options in so many finishes! Whether you’re wanting a matte, satin, or metallic berry finish, you’ll find a lipstick to give you your desires. The secret behind how smooth it is? Red peony to hydrate and protect, shea butter for nourishment, and pomegranate flower to smooth and soften. Say hello to pillow lips.
Kosas goes deep, but not in a way that makes fair skin look ghostly (and, don’t worry – they have a few options if you’re too afraid to jump into the deep end). Our weaknesses are Darkroom and Royal: berry shades that give lips of all colors a depth you’ve only imagined. And when it comes to ingredients, you’ll welcome the addition of moisturizing jojoba oil, texture-enhancing rosehip seed oil, and softening mango butter.
Less than $10 again, and yet oh-so-good… yet again. Unlike the vast majority of the berry lipsticks on this list, this option’s finish is super glossy. However, it’s not sticky or goopy, and the vinyl finish lasts up to 16 hours without transferring. Ingredients-wise, you’ll find protective vitamin E and soothing aloe in the list.
If “Epic” is in the name and the handle has studs, then you know it’s a classic KVD product. This lipstick isn’t just a berry lipstick – it also comes in neutral and brown-orange colors, plus the intense BLUEPINK. For an “epic kiss,” though, we absolutely love Womanism (though OBVS any gender can wear it), which has vegan cupuaçu butter for that bougie, balm-y feel.
If you have darker skin, then this liquid lipstick is perfect for you. Why? Because these dark berry shades stand out rather than blend in or complement your natural lip shades. Go lighter with Dutchess, or go all the way to the other end, rocking the black Bronx. Want a middle shade? Charmed is a good bet.
Gwen revolutionized red lipstick, so of course it’s an option here… but we’re not searching for red, right? Instead, move your cursor over to Stomp Box. It’s a subtle berry colored lipstick, but it still makes a statement thanks to its full-coverage, high-pigmented formula. Speaking of which: the ingredients… honestly aren’t anything to brag about. But they do give the lipstick its smooth glide, so we’ll take it.
Marissa wrote a review about Always On, in which she decided that, yep, she loved it and was bringing it to Italy. There are sooo many berry options here that we can’t name a favorite, though we do recommend the universal red-wine Misconduct and plum-perfect Girl Gang. Just want berry? Spoiler Alert is a cool choice. With a mix of jojoba, apricot, and sunflower oils, your kisser will feel kissed by total hydration.
Does NARS offer the most sexual names out there? Yep. Do we absolutely love it? Also yep! There’s just something so pleasing and sensual about saying you’re wearing “Orgasm,” you know? We digress. Pop on Rock With You for a berry lip you can’t beat, thanks to ingredients like peptides and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate and then lock in moisture.
Makeup bags are an essential part of life when you own five billion makeup products. (Just me?) And of course, if you have a makeup bag, you want it to be fashionable. Currently in: clear makeup bags.
With clear makeup bags, you can see everything you have, show off your products, and locate everything easily (super important when you’re carrying a bunch of products).
But other patterns are popular, too! My next makeup bags are for sure going to be holographics and rainbows; however, plaid is also hot right now.
If you’re like me, you’ll just collect them all. Looking for the makeup bag? The One, you could say? One of these will be made for you, then. Promise.

Clear makeup bags are the latest trend, as I said, for all of their amazing reasons. However, not all are the same! Check out the Pro Makeup Artist Bag, with its many pockets, or the colorful 5-piece option from Amazon – perfect if you’re the designated bag carrier on trips. You don’t just have to carry a clear square (though if that’s your aesthetic, hell yeah) – get creative.
Plaid says “I’m low-key and sophisticated.” It’s chill, but still more of a statement than a standard muted, neutral bag. You can choose a designer plaid bag from the amazing Vera Bradley, or light up the room with a nylon, pastel rainbow makeup bag. I also love the high-end look of the beige plaid – can you believe it’s from Amazon? Same.
Bright! Bold! Pay attention to me! That’s what a neon makeup bag says. Unless you don’t want to be the center of attention in the powder room, grab a bag that’s as big as your personality. The shine from Caboodle’s foldable box on top of the hot pink is so cute, while the neon lettering with palm leaves is a fun, night-life-inspired take.
Hello, futuristic bb. Holograms were super cool in 2020, and their excitement hasn’t faded since then. If you’re not into incorporating this look into your makeup, you can at least show it off on your makeup bag. about-face is on the cutting edge of makeup products, and we love their mini transparent makeup bag.
Rainbows, aka the joy that comes post-storms… okay, enough poeticism. How can you not smile when you see little rainbows? Answer: you can’t. You will always smile. I’m especially fond of the “Have a Nice Day” retro rainbow bag – it’s a nice, uplifting take with a groovy feel to it. Have a nice day, indeed.
Which makeup bags are your favorites? Are you more of a clear makeup bag human, or a classic, neon makeup-bag lover? Let us know in the comments!
As someone who used to have fire-truck-colored hair, I know firsthand the difficulty of finding a solid auburn eyebrow pencil. And over the years, I’ve met many like past me who say the same: “where is a goddamn eyebrow pencil for redheads?”
Turns out, there are many out there… you just need to know where to look! I’ve scoured the web and consulted with fellow redheads to find the 12 best eyebrow pencils to pair with your auburn locks.
20% of all affiliate sales are donated to The National LGBTQ+ Task Force. Thank you for your support!
We’re starting this off with a 2-in-1, of course! Juwel Cosmetics’ eyebrow pencil comes in many shades, including a gorgeous auburn perfect for darker redheads. Brush your eyebrows into place, fill in, then fluff the color out with the spoolie once more. It holds brows in place with carnauba wax and beeswax, and it moisturizes and nourishes with castor oil.
Redheads who don’t want to go too dark, but still want to look subtle, the ginger color of Wet n Wild’s Color Icon is for you. At $2.99, it’s super affordable – but 114 reviews land it at a 4.6-star rating. Use the thick spoolie for fluffing your brows, then apply the creamy pencil to shape and in sparse spots. Brush the lightweight formula through and let it last all day.
I know I sometimes want super fine lines, both to arch my brows and to fill in sparse areas with hair-like strokes. Enter: L’Oreal’s eyebrow pencil, which has a super fine tip to give you the precision you desire. If you want volume, use the spoolie to diffuse, or keep the lines clean and crisp by simply applying thin and realistic hairs.
Legit nothing worse than a brow coming off as you’re fighting through winter and spring showers, right? Thrive Causemetics agrees with this sentiment, so their brow liner stays in place no matter the weather. On top of that, Thrive uses their Buildable Smart Pigment Technology, which aims to let your natural brows shine through – they’re just elevated with the pencil.
This retractable eyebrow pencil is waterproof for up to 12 hours; cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, AND vegan; and uses carnauba wax to keep them from smudging outside of your defined lines. One/Size also includes a strong helping of vitamin E to help condition and strengthen, so your brows don’t fall out with constant application and removal.
When I started with eyebrows, I used a gel. But when it got hot, it felt like my eyebrows were being squeezed, and I was paranoid about what they looked like. Joah’s eyebrow pencil dries from gel to powder, but it won’t rinse off despite its finish. All browns can work for redheads, so no matter your shade of red, you can fill in your brows.
$3… and over 1,000 reviews raving about how well it works? The Instant Lift Brow Pencil from elf is beloved for both its price and its capabilities. The 2-in-1 factor is nice, but what makes this pencil is its formula. Grapeseed oil conditions, strengthens, and shines, while the vitamin E nourishes and stops breakage before it happens.
ColourPop’s color… pops. At least, it does with their Auburn Brow Pencil. They claim their pencil is mistake proof, so go ahead and mess up, reapply, then give up and buff out – you’ll look fabulous. The color is buildable, so continue to layer until you get your desired red shade. Vegan and cruelty-free, you can feel ethical when wearing the pencil.
Revlon’s pencil won’t make your brows red, but it will fill in the skin behind and surrounding it to give a hint of auburn. It’s ideal for those who don’t want dyed brows, but still want to emphasize their color. It’s phthalate-free and waterproof, lasting up to 24 hours with its combo of waxes and oil. But beware: they do use two types of parabens.
Bright redheads who want to scream about their color, this brow pencil is for you. It comes in subtle auburn, of course, but that Tangerine. That Full Red. Countless Crimson. Those colors that are loud and proud, fitting anything from orange to burgundy. The best part about this pencil: it’s also made for your eyes and lips, making it a 3-in-1. We can’t get enough.
This pencil is filled with oils that other pencils lack. For example, it has castor oil to nourish; jojoba oil to condition and soften; and cottonseed oil to provide an abundance of vitamin E and fatty acids, promoting repairing and strength. While Auburn isn’t vegan, the pencil is cruelty- and gluten-free.
Clean. Clean, clean, clean. Gluten-free and paraben-free, a refusal to use irritating ingredients, and vegan, this eyebrow pencil will make your brows happy – while also staying put all day. Fill, blend, then buff out with the spoolie thanks to a fine tip that is soft enough to do it all. On top of that, it’s recyclable, so none of that plastic ends up in the ocean.
Fall eyeshadow palettes are essential to entering the new season. Eyeshadow trends shift from bright to burgundy, neons to neutrals, pastels to purples, rainbows to reds, SPF to… well, you should always be wearing SPF. You know that.
My point is, you can’t get into autumn without changing your eyeshadow palettes up – it’s basically a rule. (One I made up, but I digress.)
This season, red, purple, burgundy, and orange eyeshadow is super trendy. With this knowledge in mind, I’ve picked out 11 fall eyeshadow palettes that will get you into the caramel apple and PSL spirit!
Guerlain released this eyeshadow quad mere weeks ago, making it the perfect entry to fall palettes. It comes in three different color combos: the pink and plum Majestic Rose, brown and gold Royal Jungle, and smokey-eye-suited Imperial Moon. All eyeshadows are filled with winter rose oil, which gives the formula its easy glide.
As a proud Californian, I had to include the fall-esque California Love eyeshadow palette from ColourPop. Inspired by my beautiful state’s cities, including beachy San Diego and (my) San Francisco Bay Area, the muted pinks and reds are perfect for fall – no matter where you live. Just note that El Capitan is more for the face, and absolutely not for the eyes; a little confusing, but you get used to it.
Thirteen eye AND cheek shades in one little palette, for less than $30 online? Yeah, we’ll take it. tarte’s Rainforest Temptations offers an array of shades, from gold to olive to pink to red, all of which will shimmer on your lids. The secret ingredient here is Amazonian clay, which gives this eyeshadow palette its long-lasting wear.
Melt is known for their “high” (lol I’m funny) quality eyeshadow palettes, and the twenty-seven palette is no exception. Consisting of 10 red-orange-burgundy shades, you’ll have a fierce look that only the bold will dare to replicate. The formula is Leaping Bunny certified, free of parabens and gluten, and totally vegan – they truly love up on the animal kingdom.
Hurry while the price is cut in half, because who doesn’t love spending less than $70 instead of $129? (I love it. Me. Just check out my review of Amazon’s Foreo dupe, that’s how dedicated I am to saving.) The 15 shades come in a variety of finishes, including matte, duo chrome, metallic, and chrome crystal. It’s totally free of talc, too; if you’re sensitive to the ingredient, this palette is for you.
Another talc-free palette? Hell yeah, we’ll scoop it up! Instead, this mini palette uses mica for its texture and glimmer, while shea butter nourishes and conditions the eye area. The combination helps more sensitive eyes avoid irritation, while still being able to wear a fall eyeshadow palette – this time, in gorgeous berry shades with matte, satin, and metallic finishes.
Oh, look – talc-free again! We can’t NOT include those palettes for the bbs who read this and wonder if there’s more than one option for a fall eyeshadow palette. MINERALIST comes with two berry shades, three beiges, and one deep brown, all of which are infused with antioxidant-filled rosehip and sea buckthorn oils. The result: nourishment while looking f*cking fire.
Don’t need 15 shades, but want more than one? Enter: e.l.f., here to save the day as per usual. Berry Bad is soooo very good, with four shades that complement one another, are similar in shade, but are different depths to create a complex look. The clean formula is to die for, and the $3 price tag can’t be beat. Throw it in your bag – or wallet, or pocket – and touch up throughout the day as needed.
PÜR is PÜR because they push the envelope. For example, in this perfect-for-fall eyeshadow palette, they’ve included hemp to treat dry skin and create the perfect canvas for eyeshadow. At the same time, a blend of ginseng, green tea, and vitamin B come together to rejuvenate and fight aging in the eye area, so your eyeshadow doesn’t bring you down (or bring your skin’s age up).
This burgundy makeup palette is perfect for fall, because it touches upon every color you think of – orange, red, rust, gold, bronze – when you imagine the leaves changing color. The 12-pan palette gives you glitz and glam or soft and sweet depending on the mood with its plethora of finishes, and it’s small enough to travel with. Bonus: it comes with a mirror (something that’s missing from too many palettes), so you don’t need to use your phone camera anymore. Win!
Morphe’s palettes are always so elaborate, and this 35-pan palette is no exception. Fierce by Nature is a kind of perfect name for an eyeshadow palette resembling fall’s picturesque nature, and the colors – blood to deep red, browns, dark berries, and two pops of bright green – stand out on any skin tone. Be bold or blend in, stand out or stand back… whatever you want to channel, this palette offers.
How dare you doubt unicorns exist when there is Unicorn Snot on Amazon? Biodegradable and in a gel-like formula, Unicorn Snot is made from 100% plant starches, rather than microplastics, so it will degrade over time. Because it’s a gel, you don’t need any extra glues to keep the glitter on – especially useful when the glue is not good for the environment. Slap it on and you’re on your way.
I am obsessed with holographic makeup, so including a biodegradable glittery product that reflects light in my favorite way? A no brainer for this list. Like Unicorn Snot, this is a gel, but it doesn’t only illuminate your skin – it treats it, too. Aloe is cool and soothing to the epidermis, so any irritation from the glitter is reversed. Essential oils make you smell good, rather than glue-y and chemical-y even without the plastic.
So! Many! Colors! To choose from! And they’re all highly-pigmented and gorgeous, so good luck deciding on just one. This biodegradable glitter is perfect as body glitter for festivals, then glitter for DIY projects, then body glitter for more festivals… you get it. The versatility comes down to the formula: plant cellulose, rather than microplastics. And, yes, it’s legit: it’s been independently tested and approved by ISO and ASTM standards.
We spoke with Shari Siadat of TooD, and she wanted to make it clear: you’re allowed to put BODY glitter everywhere, including your toe hair, the nape of your neck, your unibrow, your happy trail… you have hair, the glitter belongs there. The glitter biodegrades within 28 days, and it’s perfect for layering on top of TooD’s Freestyle Color Cream for an ultra-bold, ultra-disco-ball look.
Put some shimmer on your kisser! Lipstick smears super easily; while it’s tempting to rock that red, glittery lip, chances are it won’t last that long. This strawberry-flavored lip gloss goes on sparkling and doesn’t stick thanks to peach oil. Instead, ingredients such as chamomile oil, coconut oil, and glycerin work together to soften and smooth your pout, while vitamin E protects from environmental stressors.
There are SO many options from Moon Shatter, whether you want a blend of colors or a straightforward sparkle. I’m choosing the Tinsel Joy Blend because it’s so goddamn tropical and cheerful. The biodegradable body glitter is made from cellulose film, sustainably derived from six-year-old eucalyptus trees. Don’t worry: the trees are responsibly grown on a plantation in France, so you’re not destroying the earth in order to not destroy the earth.
Many people have dreams of finding spring flings or, even, lasting romance on Coachella’s ferris wheel (this happened to a friend – it’s possible). Sound like you? Wear the aphrodisia-inspired I LAVA YOU glitter set, a combination of white, silver, and bright orange biodegradable body glitter to heat things up. It breaks down in four weeks, and it comes with aloe vera primer to keep skin comfy when grasping onto the glitter.
Catching somebody’s eye has never been easier when your own eyes are popping, thanks to these lid poppers. Dermatologist-tested and biodegradable, the glitter sticks to the adhesive for hours on end and won’t irritate even the most sensitive of eyes. Cruelty-free and vegan, as well as ultra-reflective and gentle, we couldn’t exclude glitter made exclusively for the eyes… but we won’t tell anyone if you apply it elsewhere.
Happy August! Whether it’s your first year as a college student or your 50th, it’s important to stock your makeup bag with fresh products. After all, the parties, the club events, the presentations, the everyday looks – you want to look glam for all of it!
EMBED GIF ARIANA HAIR
But not all makeup is made the same – not when you’re a college student pulling all-nighters, or rushing from a late-night kickback to an 8 am, or quickly applying eyeliner in the back of an Uber from class to the bars. We at QUILL know this, and we’ve put together a list of necessary products that will take care of your woes!
First and foremost: makeup wipes. Yes, you should have a skincare routine, but I did not have one for my six years in college, and I’d say my skin turned out pretty alright. My move: get home, wipe off makeup, sleep, wake up, wipe off makeup, repeat.
If you’re going to be lazy like me (totally fair), pick wipes that will get off even the most stubborn mascara in one go. And be eco-friendly! Even if they aren’t reusable, you can still choose makeup wipes that are good for the environment.
Tinted Spot Treatment
Treat that zit with a dose of tint and a side of skincare! There are plenty of spot treatments out there that pull double duty and will cover up that blemish while also treating it at its source. Obvs, it’s not going to be as great as using skincare on it every night, so def pull out some actual cleanser, too. But during the day/night, when you can’t apply every product known to man? Tinted spot treatments. I’m telling you.
Cheek, Lip, and Eye Tints
Cheek-lip tints are life-savers, but more of a lifesaver? Tints that can also go on your eyes, giving you a nice, full flush of color. (Pink doesn’t have to look like pink eye, promise!) The trick: finding one that’s subtle enough to give a slight pop, or bold enough to be blunt and say “I’m here, and I’m making a statement.” Try going with an orange-leaning tint instead, or a burst of berry.
Clear Mascara-Brow Duo
Don’t waste time picking whether to bring your mascara or eyebrow brush – use a duo instead. There are plenty of clear options out there, so while you won’t get the jet-black lashes you want if you’re a blonde, casual days will get a lift. It’s makeup for the everyday college student that can quickly be transformed into a glam date-night look.
Need eyeliner and eyeshadow? Choose an eyeshadow stick and experience the best of both worlds. We highly recommend chubby pencils that can be sharpened – they cover plenty of surface area, (usually) blend effortlessly, and also provide enough of a point to give you a slick line. The result: a smokey eye in one product and some finger smudging.
Finally, if you’re going to wear a full face of makeup, pleeeease make sure there’s some SPF in there! It can be easy to skip out on sunscreen when wearing other makeup – what if it melts off? What if the ingredients don’t work together? – and while you should always wear actual sunscreen, sometimes you slip. (Guilty!) So, pick a foundation that has some sun protection. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing.

When you think about the 1980s, what comes to mind? Is it the harmonious hits of Bruce Springsteen (who btw was Born in the USA), or the controversial structured shoulder (*cough* shoulder pads)?
For me, it involves eyebrows. Instead of a meticulously plucked look, the ’80s boasted full and fluffy, totally natural brows that were loud and proud, seemingly a vessel of personal expression.
Unfortunately, the natural look slowly morphed into the overly-plucked skinny mini brows of the ’90s and Y2K. Not only was this era notorious for narrow brows, but for narrow female physique, popularizing the idea that the idea of femininity equated to shrinking the body until it was barely visible…
I’ll save you dear readers from my soap box on ~beauty standards~ and point out that we have come a long way. Especially now, here in 2022, the resurgence of the full brow is back — and I think it’s here to stay.
New Year, New Name
The feathered eyebrow. No, not the very… different trend from 2017 (where eyebrows were literally made into feathers), but the fully wild and beautifully unkempt eyebrows of today. Capitalizing on the natural look, feathered eyebrows present as bushy yet neatly combed with the use of makeup or a technique entitled microfeathering. The genius behind the method is eyebrow extraordinaire, Kristie Streicher co-founder of Striiike. Our queen, Streicher, was unimpressed by an original eyebrow method, microblading, so she decided to come up with her own.
Micro-what? WTF is That?
Let’s understand the basics, what the heck is microblading and why would you want it? Microblading uses semi-permanent technology (a hand-held device with tiny blades that are dipped in pigment) to create hair-like lines to your existing eyebrows. Essentially microblading emboldens your original eyebrow to make it big, bold, and defined (which can. If done correctly, the procedure ensures your eyebrows will never have to be filled in again– save for a touch up every 12 months.
This brings us to the alternate method, microfeathering. The eyebrow master Kristie Streicher, thought the look of microblading was too tattoo-like, making it obvious that the brow was not natural. She adapted the technique, ensuring that the microblade was used to enhance the brow that was already present instead of building up and around it. This trend pulls back the layers of a heavily made-up face (although there ain’t nothing wrong with that) and helps to construct a prominence to your original brow.
So… What Are The Cons?
In the age of social media, fads are usually just that, fads. Since the act of microblading/feathering is semi-permanent, you may still be sporting your look after the trend has set sail. Similarly, the result of the procedure may not be what you bargained for, leaving you feeling like you’re having a perpetually bad hair day.
BEWARE: If you’re prone to infection or keloids, pregnant or breastfeeding, on blood thinners, or have sensitivity to cosmetic pigments, you are ineligible for this procedure.
No need to fear! I have found some non-needly ways to make your brows go from flat to full, feathered fluff.
Kits and Sh*t
If you’re not ready for commitment, like all men I have met, your eyebrows won’t have to endure the heartbreak. Instead, get yoself an eyebrow kit which will include a serum to help grow the brows, a solvent to perm, a cleanser, and an eyebrow soap — when wet, the soap turns into a gel to place the brows exactly where you want them to be. Some of these kits can get tricky, both in application and when comparing price to effectiveness (do not underestimate the power of reviews!).
For our more fancy followers, I recommend the Brow Code Lustre Lamination Kit for a cute lil price of $79.90.This baby comes with five products: a perming solution, a fixing solution, a keratin nourishing solution, a brow adhesive, and a brow oil! The website provides an easy-to-follow step-by-step tutorial for your lamination needs. You’ll have your brows thicker than ever in no time.
If you’re looking for a more conservative route, aka wanting to maximize the bang for that buck, look into Makeup Revolution’s Brow Sculpt Kit ($7.00). Distributed in travel size packaging, it includes a brow gel, powder, highlighter, tweezer, brush, AND spoolie. For use, shape your brow with the spoolie and gel to prep it for some fill in. When you’re satisfied with the arch, get that powder on the brush and apply hair-like strokes to add some oomph or fill in as you wish.
