We’re all about scentless products here at QUILL. Next up on our list of totally neutral, fragrance free products: unscented sunscreen!
Now that it’s summer, you should absolutely be slathering on the sunscreen (though you should be wearing it every season — you are wearing it every season, right?). But on days when you don’t feel like announcing yourself via scent – say, when you have an outdoor meeting or are trying to avoid smelling like a coconut-vanilla candy store – fragrance free sunscreen is the way to go.

All too often have I found a good spray-on sunscreen… that does nothing. Either it melts off in the sun or isn’t water-resistant, so I spend the day in the ocean and have a gnarly sunburn at the end of the day. Public Goods’ sunscreen is SPF 50, protecting against UVA and UVB rays, and aloe and avocado nourish the skin while the sunscreen itself works hard for its water-resistant 80 minutes. It’s also reef-safe, so, yeah, definitely wear this to the beach without guilt.
How many times can I say I love a good 2-in-1? Not enough, which is why I’m including Jaxon Lane’s Rain Or Shine sunscreen. Not only does it protect, it also acts as a moisturizer. You can thank ingredients like vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, green tea, ginseng, and licorice root – all of which combine to protect, repair, and hydrate without a smell. There’s no white film or extra grease, either; it dissolves just like it says it will.
You’ll find that I’ve included more than one “baby” sunscreen, and it’s because they’re fragrance-free the vast majority of the time. Pipette’s reef-friendly mineral sunscreen has SPF 50, helping to provide protection from the worst rays. Heavily-tested non nano zinc oxide cools, while wild gooseberry extract calms post infrared-light exposure. Then there’s bisabolol’s antioxidants and squalane’s moisture, giving sensitive skin lightweight protection.
Okay, at this point, what doesn’t Native sell? They have a revered coconut and pineapple scent for their sunscreen, but their unscented option is a welcome addition. It offers broad spectrum protection with SPF 30, and the formula – with non-nano zinc oxide as the only active ingredient – soaks in without white residue or thick grease. Feel your skin being coddled by ingredients including sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, avocado oil, and glycerin. Your skin is thanking you, and the sun is hating you.
We love cocokind, and their daily spf is just another item in their arsenal that does what it promises. The mineral-based formula uses non-nano zinc oxide, but it also has phytoplankton and microalgae to protect from UVA, UVB, and pollution. With other ingredients like rice starch, aloe, argan seed oil, and sunflower seed oil, you no longer have to worry about wrinkles, fine lines, burning, dark spots… you know, anything, basically.
Sunscreen should protect first and foremost, obvs. But it should not be greasy, and it should not be drying. Bu strikes a happy balance with their alcohol-free, SPF 30 sunscreen, which just so happens to smell like absolutely nothing. Vitamin E is your skin’s savior here, protecting from free radicals, while bisabolol works as an anti-inflammatory and soothes any extra spots that are a little toooo toasty.
Marissa reviewed the Supergoop! Sampler from Sephora. Key ingredients: frankincense for soothing, a meadowfoam-seed-derived complex to increase hydration, and shea butter to soften. But take it from Marissa. “The oil-free formula is totally invisible and weightless. It works well as a makeup primer or as a mattefying finish after your daily moisturizer; you can’t go wrong with however you choose to use it!”
Okay, y’all know how much we love the convenience of stick products here at QUILL (cough foundation, cough eyeshadow, cough literally everything). So why stop at sunscreen? The KidStick was intended for kids, but anyone can use it. We love that it’s reef-safe, so you can wear it in the ocean and feel good about it. Totally fragrance-free, it was derm-developed, so you know your skin will be taken care of.
As we all know, the sun is a catalyst for aging skin… Unless you stumble across a sunscreen with peptides that help with anti-aging. Yep, I’m referencing Alastin’s Silkshield SPF 30, which helps stop fine lines in their tracks no matter how long you sit in the sun. The sunscreen’s formula is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and cruelty-free, so you can feel free to hit the beach and sunbathe (responsibly and with regular reapplication, of course).
If it’s safe and gentle enough for the lil baby, it’s safe and gentle enough for you, too. Made with 100% non-nano zinc oxide (meaning the sunscreen’s protective zinc won’t enter your blood, just your epidermis), reap the benefits of unscented SPF 50 combined with other ingredients like anti-inflammatory calendula, soothing chamomile, protective sunflower seed oil, and anti-aging watercress.
Saie hello to a sunscreen that is completely unscented, yet oh-so-effective with its non-smelly ingredients. Sunvisor is advertised as a serum, moisturizer, oil, and sunscreen – all in one. We love the (scentless) convenience! It ticks each box with its range of ingredients, which include brightening vitamin C, moisture-locking hyaluronic acid, protective vitamin E, and soothing aloe. Zinc oxide provides SPF 35 to keep UVA and UVB rays at bay.
As anyone with eczema knows, finding a product for your skin can be mind-numbing – especially after experiencing so many failures. But people rave about Eczema Honey Co.’s unscented sunscreen. 18.9% Zinc Oxide provides SPF 30, while coconut alkanes lock in hydration, glycerin and aloe vera moisturize, and shea butter, jojoba seed extract, and apple fruit extract soften. And wouldn’t you buy it if 37 separate people recommended it to you? …Because they do.
Five ingredients. Count ‘em: five! It doesn’t have five billion ingredients, but the ones it does have will nourish you enough to not need them, you know? Plus, 98% of the ingredients are organic, keeping skin healthy. Clean zinc oxide is the only active ingredient, balanced out by organic sunflower oil, organic beeswax, organic sea buckthorn oil, and sunflower vitamin E. It’s also super sustainable, made with solar power, and the formula is reef-friendly and cruelty-free.
Its packaging announces its reef safety, which we always love – it tells us that it matters to them and they’re proud of it. The SPF 28 solution includes aloe, and it’s bursting with vitamin E. Read: it’ll soothe, which is nice, but it also protects from harsh environmental stressors that can damage even the toughest skin. The sunscreen is made without parabens, phthalates, silicones, or sulfates, and it’s fragrance free.
This sunscreen is different in that it’s a powder you rub onto your skin. So, instead of absorbing, it sits on the surface and deflects directly. UVA and UVB rays are scattered instead of penetrating the epidermis, and the powder never breaks down. There’s an option containing essential oils, but the unscented option is free of smells of any kind – even your standard sunscreen smell. Zinc oxide is the leading ingredient, with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil included, too.
Another “baby” formula that’s ideal for any skin, no matter your age, so bring it to beach days with the kids. Your skin will be protected and softened with ingredients like the powerful zinc oxide, plus jojoba oil, shea butter, and vitamin E. It’s biodegradable and eco-friendly, and it’s never tested on animals. To avoid even the slightest potential irritation, the sunscreen is entirely fragrance free.
How many times have you darker-skinned darlings put on sunscreen, only for that awkward white sheen to linger on your skin like some sort of “I-put-sunscreen-on-today” badge? No more! Unsun Cosmetics’ Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen is a color-corrector and sun-protector in one, and it comes in different shades for different skin tones. The formula is reef-safe and lasts up to 80 minutes in one rub-down, so catch some waves – or some rays, whatever feels right to you.
We obvs love zit stickers, but did you know that ZitSticka also makes sunscreen? Kind of a no-brainer when you think about it. Megashade (love the name) has SPF 50 in a serum, not a cream. Best for acne-prone skin and derm-tested, the product contains ingredients like soothing aloe vera, calming green tea, hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture, anti-aging peptides, radiant watermelon extract, and more. Acne and burning? Bye. The ultimate glow? Hiiiii.
